How Being Mad at Marvel Inspired My Business 🙌🎥📲
(or "Inertia, Refinement, and Telling Our Stories")
Refinement of anything is an ongoing process. Sometimes I don’t want to do it, especially when I meet the private inertia that comes with the solitary aspects of my work as an artist and entrepreneur. I ask myself, “Why am I doing this? Should I be doing this? Should I quit?” Then I do a stretch or breathwork or a push up and tell myself to keep going. Without fail, after I pass that moment in the eye of the creative storm that feels like I’m lost in total chaos, I finally see the finished product, and I remember why I embarked on the journey in the first place. That was my experience making our latest ReelwUrld vision video. I’d love your eyes on this 2-minute clip:
I was motivated by Bruce Lee’s words that a single technique practiced a thousand times is more formidable than a thousand techniques practiced once (paraphrasing). It took several vision videos and thousands of in-person pitches to get to our award-winning pitch (😭 but it’s okay). Since our first place win, I knew we had to film a formal presentation that contained all of the visual references from our show to our patent filing to our app and community. While I love all of that, what I cherish most is sharing images of my father’s unpublished Silver Surfer novel from his days at Marvel. If there is a linchpin for ReelwUrld, it’s my father’s story, and how the challenges with his book influenced me and my perspective of corporate versus community interests. Not to be cryptic, but the diagram of his work with his mentor Jim Shooter I flash on-screen is worth a few Googles (or, dare I say, Bings) on the history of crowdsourcing user-generated content in comic book form. Dad spoke about it in bonus content from my podcast with him last year, with the original version including cameos from legendary Spider-Man comics editor Danny Fingeroth and ReelwUrld’s advisor from the FBI, Chip Massey.
Thanks for continuing to witness the evolution of ReelwUrld and my journey with it. If you’re not already part of our formal community as a follower, a cast member of our first show, or investor on wefunder.com/reelwurld, we’d love to have you. And please spread the word on what we’re building together!
With Love,
